How long does a severe coma from encephalitis usually last?

Patients with encephalitis may become confused or even unconscious if they are severe, and particularly severe patients may have recurrent seizures or even persistent status epilepticus. Therefore, how long a comatose patient with encephalitis remains unconscious depends mainly on the intracranial pressure and the presence or absence of seizures, and will probably be unconscious for about 1 month. If this type of patient is treated aggressively, including dehydration to lower the cranial pressure, and wake-promoting therapy, and the intracranial pressure is reduced to less than 200 mm of water column, there is hope that the patient will regain consciousness at this time. If there are no significant severe seizures at the same time, there is a greater chance of regaining consciousness, and further MRIs can be performed to see the severity of brain cell damage.
