Causes of inferior vena cava widening

Widening of the inferior vena cava is commonly seen in two types of clinical conditions. The first type of disease is a stenotic change in the superior vena cava, which results in ineffective return of blood from the inferior vena cava. The second type of disease is when the patient has right heart failure, which results in abnormal venous return. Patients are usually advised to have an ultrasound examination of the superior vena cava and the heart, and if the examination reveals thrombosis of the superior vena cava leading to luminal stenosis, interventional thrombectomy is required. If the test results suggest that the symptoms are caused by cardiac insufficiency, anti-cardiac failure treatment such as diuresis, cardiac strengthening, and improvement of myocardial ischemia should be given under the guidance of the doctor.
