The phenomenon of cold hands and feet in babies with fever is related to the underdeveloped nervous system, and some studies have shown that it is due to underdeveloped capillaries and capillary spasm, but the cause has not been accurately determined. Chinese medicine believes that it belongs to the category of true heat and false cold evidence, and it is necessary to find ways to cool down the child. Clinically, the treatment of fever in babies mainly relies on oral medication, physical cooling and meridian drip cooling. First of all, you can use oral medication to lower the temperature of children with fever over 38.5°C. The first-line children’s fever-reducing drugs often used clinically are pediatric ibuprofen suspension and pediatric acetaminophen oral solution, which can be given to children in age-appropriate doses orally, and the body temperature will drop in about 30 to 40 minutes. If the child’s temperature is recurrent, a 2nd dose can be given after an interval of 4 hours. In addition, 75% alcohol can be applied to the child’s neck, armpits and groin to lower the temperature. If alcohol is not available, a hot towel can be used to wipe the child’s whole body to achieve physical cooling. If oral medication and physical cooling are not effective, the child can be taken to the hospital for further consultation to lower the body temperature through intravenous fluids.
