The causes of snoring include upper airway factors and systemic factors. Snoring caused by structural abnormalities in the upper airway can be treated by surgery; snoring caused by systemic factors is useless for surgery. Local factors in the upper airway include adenoid hypertrophy, tonsil hypertrophy, turbinate hypertrophy, deviated nasal septum, nasal polyps, epiglottis lesions and other causes of upper airway narrowing and tissue collapse. Snoring occurs due to the presence of increased resistance when breathing. After detailed evaluation of the specific cause of localized obstruction of the upper airway, surgical treatment such as adenoidectomy, tonsillectomy, nasal septum correction, nasal polyp removal, etc., can effectively expand the cross-sectional area of the upper airway when breathing to make the airway open, thus eliminating the symptom of snoring. If snoring is caused by systemic factors, such as obesity, hypothyroidism, etc.; or caused by central system diseases, it is useless to do surgery, need to treat systemic diseases, and wear positive pressure ventilator treatment if necessary.
