Medicines for tension headaches

Medications for tension headaches can be chosen from non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, muscle relaxants, and tricyclic antidepressants.
Tension headache is a tight pain in the occipital region on both sides or in the whole head. It is associated with central nervous system pathology, pericranial muscle contraction or ischemia, stress, tension, and depression.
For episodic tension headaches, treatment may be symptomatic with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin and acetaminophen, but care needs to be taken to avoid the misuse of analgesics to avoid causing pharmacologic overuse headaches.
For the treatment of frequent as well as chronic tension headaches, tricyclic antidepressants such as doxepin and amitriptyline can be chosen for prophylactic treatment. Muscle relaxants (etoperisone hydrochloride, baclofen) can also be used.
When tension headache occurs, it is recommended to consult a doctor in time, and the medication should be used under the guidance of a specialized doctor.
