Do gallstones require surgery?

Patients with gallstones are treated surgically on a case-by-case decision, but generally do not require open major incision surgery. The vast majority of them can be solved by laparoscopic surgery. If gallbladder stones have symptoms of abdominal pain, or multiple gallbladder stones, or enlarged or atrophic gallbladder, and also if, for example, there are combined gallbladder polyps, gallbladder adenomas, or even highly suspected manifestations of gallbladder cancer, or if there are underlying diseases present, cases like these require active examination and evaluation and surgical removal of the gallbladder. If the gallbladder is gangrenous and the triangular structure of the gallbladder is unclear, the gallbladder is perforated, or there is a suspicion of intermediate to advanced gallbladder cancer, then open surgery is required.
