How are depression and anxiety medications treated?

Since ancient times, everyone knows the truth of taking medication for illnesses such as hypertension, diabetes, coronary heart disease, cerebral infarction, etc. No matter how the physician prescribes, we can all treat it calmly and take it seriously. However, there are exceptions, there are some diseases many patients will hesitate, look forward and back, take the medicine is not so painful, shallow taste, afraid to bring trouble to the body, this is the depression and anxiety patients’ mentality performance. This mentality of depression and anxiety patients often brings disadvantages to the treatment, and many people have poor results, mainly as a result of giving up too soon under such a mentality. It seems that there are some misconceptions on how to treat depression and anxiety properly, which need to be taken seriously. Now we analyze them from the following aspects: first, the correct knowledge propaganda is not enough, many patients think that depression and anxiety are not mental illnesses and do not need long-term treatment, so they do not understand the physician’s guidance on medication; second, the drugs for depression and anxiety are not good for the body, and taking them for a long time will cause dependence; third, depression and anxiety diseases themselves are diseases that are abnormally sensitive to changes in themselves and the environment, and due to the patients’ awareness of the disease Third, depression and anxiety disorders are inherently sensitive to changes in oneself and the environment, and patients may not be able to adapt to the slight discomfort that occurs in the process of taking medication due to the lack of awareness and confidence in treatment. In response to these misconceptions, we will now provide the correct common sense. Depression and anxiety are a group of symptoms commonly associated with lack of energy, lack of interest, emotional instability, headache and dizziness, distraction, palpitation and chest tightness, insomnia and early awakening, and other physical discomfort. The essence is the disorder and lack of neurotransmitters such as pentraxin and norepinephrine in certain parts of the central nervous system, which cannot provide sufficient amount of substances to meet the brain’s working needs. Therefore, the treatment process of depression and anxiety is to improve the supply through drugs and establish a new “supply and demand balance” process. What kind of medication can really achieve complete control or even cure? From the above, we already know the nature of depression and anxiety, which is actually not terrible. The first step of treatment is to build up enough self-confidence, and also to be fully prepared and willing to accept complete treatment, and then the process will be much easier. The drugs that are commonly used in clinical practice, referred to as the “five golden flowers”, are as safe as the drugs used to treat other diseases, and have no significant toxic side effects over a longer period of time. For physicians, a full course of treatment is the most basic principle of treatment. How long is appropriate can be illustrated by the following chart (see illustration). As can be seen from the diagram, the optimal time from taking the drug to its onset of action is 1 to 3 months with a consolidation treatment period of 4 to 9 months. If it is below this process, the symptoms are very prone to relapse and the money and effort spent by the patient is wasted. This is because it takes time for neurotransmitters like pentraxin and norepinephrine to reach normal levels. Therefore, in order to achieve satisfactory treatment results, physicians always take great pains to tell patients to take their medication on time and in the right amount, and any unauthorized reduction and discontinuation of medication is not beneficial to treatment. A very small number of patients may need to take the medication for life due to their physical peculiarities and the severity of the disease. There is also a technique to stop the medication, and the reduction of such medication should be done gradually, with the withdrawal time and treatment time being comparable, basically 1:1. Therefore, the whole course of treatment is usually about 1 year. Withdrawing the drug too quickly can cause discomfort and the so-called “withdrawal syndrome”. For those who are willing to accept the treatment, they should also be prepared for this. As for whether to use one or a combination of drugs, the physician will give specific instructions according to the condition, and the patient just needs to use it as prescribed. In the end, as long as this point is explained thoroughly, I believe that the majority of patients can accept it. As a physician, always hope from the bottom of his heart that his patients are getting better one by one, the key is to see whether the patient himself has a self-confidence.
