How long does it take to get a painful medical abortion?

The intense pain of a medical abortion usually lasts about 2-3 hours, depending on the individual’s constitution, and cannot be generalized. A medical abortion usually results in lower abdominal pain and vaginal bleeding 2 hours after taking misoprostol orally, and begins to expel the pregnancy tissue. As the pregnancy material is expelled, the abdominal pain will be significantly relieved and lasts mostly for about 2-3 hours. Mild lower abdominal pain caused by contractions may also occur after a medical abortion and usually lasts 1-2 days. A small amount of vaginal bleeding, usually less than menstrual flow, usually lasts for about a week. If there is still vaginal bleeding after two weeks, it is recommended to visit the hospital promptly to rule out the possibility of residual pregnancy material. In addition, if the patient has lower abdominal pain for a longer period of time and still cannot expel the pregnancy, and if there is also an increase in vaginal bleeding, the possibility of incomplete abortion should be considered, and if necessary, treatment should be performed to remove the uterus.
