Timing of surgery for precordial disease

The vast majority of congenital heart diseases can be treated surgically, and the majority of patients can reach the level of normal heart function after surgery, but the appropriate timing of surgery is important, and it used to be said that 1-8 years old is the most appropriate age range for surgery for most congenital heart diseases. However, with the rapid development of modern science and technology, the use of a large number of bionic materials and new technologies, especially the new understanding of some diseases and clinical experience, there are some diseases that must be operated within one year of age, or even need to be operated immediately after birth. And clinical observation shows that the results of some precordial diseases are often better after early treatment than the results of traditional surgery timing. If the optimal surgical period is missed, children may be left with varying degrees of damage to other organs, especially damage to the pulmonary artery vessels, such as pulmonary hypertension, and in severe cases, the opportunity for surgery may be lost. Patients who are too old, especially those over 6 years old, are more likely to have irreversible organ damage due to long-term cardiac overload, and the risk of surgery increases accordingly, and they cannot recover completely after surgery.   Cardiac surgery is a fast developing discipline in recent years, but some medical workers in China have not kept up with this development trend, so they do not know the current level of cardiac surgery, and they do not know that some diseases must be treated at a young age, such as ventricular septal defect and atrial septal defect. 10 years ago, the textbook said to wait until the child is older, until the child is 5 years old, and then treat it. In fact, the situation at that time was that the mortality rate was very high when the disease was treated under 2 years of age. But nowadays, the level is different, and the best age for ventricular septal defect is around 2 years old, and not later than 3 years old. If it is any later, the survival rate of the child will be affected. This disease is now generally best operated on within 1 year of age. However, at present, we often see older children with precocious heart disease coming to the hospital, and there are already very serious ones who have even lost the time for surgery. Our doctors ask, “Why did you come so late?” “The local hospital doctor said to wait until the child is older, the child is too young to do it.” The child’s family replied. In reality, that was not the case. I hope that people are aware of the developments in cardiac surgery and that more children with congenital heart disease can be treated in a timely manner.      If your child is suspected of having congenital heart disease, please have an ultrasound examination of the heart as soon as possible. If congenital heart disease is diagnosed, you should see an experienced cardiac surgeon early, who will tell you the most appropriate time for surgery
