Cold weather, beware of facial paralysis

After the autumn equinox, the weather becomes colder and there is an increase in the number of patients with facial paralysis caused by cold winds. The main manifestation of facial palsy is distortion of the mouth and eyes, especially the weakness of the affected side of the eyes, regardless of gender and age. Recently, the woman who came to the clinic said that the day before yesterday when she came home from work, it was raining and windy, and she didn’t feel any discomfort at that time, but when she got up the next morning to brush her teeth, she suddenly found that her mouth couldn’t close tightly, and when she spat out water, she always sprayed to one side, and was later diagnosed with facial palsy. It is no coincidence that Mr. Zhang, who lives in Hanyang Zhongjia Village, forgot to close the window when he went to bed a few nights ago. After getting up one morning, he suddenly felt numbness and stiffness in his left cheek and could not open his mouth to eat breakfast, so he rushed to the hospital. Facial palsy should be detected and treated early, and the efficacy of acupuncture in treating facial palsy is very precise. The World Health Organization (WHO) lists acupuncture treatment as the primary method for treating facial nerve palsy. The treatment of facial nerve palsy with acupuncture can regulate the facial meridians, disperse the wind and cold, open up the channels, and allow the blood and qi to flow, so that the tendons can be nourished and the facial palsy can be restored. The most prominent advantage of acupuncture is that it can achieve better treatment results faster and minimize the chance of sequelae. Facial palsy is generally divided into a developmental phase, a resting phase and a recovery phase. Acupuncture treatment is usually performed during the resting phase after 7 days of onset. In fact, this treatment method is somewhat conservative, and acupuncture can also be performed during the developmental stage, because early acupuncture treatment can accelerate local blood circulation, as well as promote the decreasing of inflammation and edema and speed up the recovery of facial palsy. After treatment, 80% of facial palsy patients can be cured. If less than treated, the recovery of facial nerve muscle function is not complete, facial palsy sequelae will occur.
