How long does bone cement last?

The bone cement itself has a lifespan comparable to that of the human body and can last for decades. Once implanted inside the body, bone cement is very stable and can be used for a long time. As a commonly used internal fixation material, bone cement, after being implanted inside the body, produces a series of chemical reactions and eventually forms a relatively stable substance. This kind of material is not easy to decompose in the body. Therefore, after being implanted into the body, bone cement can be used for a long period of time during the human life cycle. However, in clinical practice, we do see some patients who have loosened, ruptured, or had a rejection reaction to the bone cement, resulting in the need for a second surgical procedure. Most of these patients are due to non-compliance with the doctor’s instructions, strenuous activities on the site, or re-traumatization of the site, which leads to the above situation of the bone cement. Under normal use, bone cement remains very stable for at least 5 to 15 years. After that, the cement may wear out to a certain degree, but this does not affect the patient’s continued use. In conclusion, bone cement can be used for a long time after implanted inside the human body, but only if the patients use the relevant parts correctly and protect them under the guidance of doctors.
