How to recover from a knee meniscus injury

Meniscal injuries of the knee are commonly caused by trauma or excessive weight-bearing sports. There are two main approaches to its treatment, including conservative treatment and surgical treatment. Conservative treatment includes rest, medication and physical therapy. Physiotherapy is the main treatment option in conservative treatment. If the knee joint pain is obvious and the movement is limited, you can use crutches and other assistance. Applying cold compresses to the knee joint after an acute injury can reduce pain and swelling for 2-3 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days or until the pain and swelling disappear. However, these conservative treatments are not sufficient. If the damage is significant and symptoms of instability are present surgery may be needed to repair or remove the unstable meniscal tissue. For more severely fragmented menisci, some require complete removal. These procedures can now generally be done arthroscopically in the knee. If repair is performed, it may need to be protected at a later stage. Short-term results are very good for those who undergo meniscal surgery, but some who cannot be repaired can cause osteoarthritis, which is mainly caused by damage to the articular cartilage due to excessive grinding of the joint. Patients with meniscus damage in the knee can choose a treatment option based on their condition. When abnormal pain is found in the knee joint, it is best to seek medical attention.
