What are the best treatment measures for liver cancer?

Liver cancer is one of the common malignant tumors in China, 70-80% of which are complicated on the basis of hepatitis B cirrhosis, and hepatitis virus plays an important role in its pathogenesis. At present, there are many treatment methods for hepatocellular carcinoma, but there are only three internationally recognized treatment methods that may achieve curative effect: 1) surgical resection; 2) liver transplantation; 3) radiofrequency ablation of tumor. The principle of treatment is “comprehensive treatment mainly based on surgical resection”. 1.Surgical resection: It is the most commonly used and classic treatment for liver cancer, which is to remove the tumor completely from the body with definite curative effect. At present, the 5-year survival rate of patients with early to mid-stage liver cancer in China after radical resection can reach about 50%, and the 10-year survival rate can reach about 40%. With the continuous progress of surgical technology, there is no forbidden area for liver cancer surgery now. 2.Liver transplantation: The postoperative recurrence rate of liver cancer patients who meet the “Milan” standard is low and even comparable to the long-term survival rate of benign liver disease after liver transplantation, and its five-year survival rate can reach about 70%. It is the most ideal means to cure liver cancer. The surgery not only removes the tumor completely, but also removes the “soil” where the tumor grows, so it is easier to achieve the effect of radical cure; moreover, there is no hepatitis virus left in the liver after the surgery, which can achieve the effect of clinical removal of hepatitis B virus. 3.Radiofrequency ablation of tumor: It is a method to make tumor cells necrotic and absorb through local heat production, which is minimally invasive and has less influence on patients’ general condition. It is mainly used for patients with tumor between 1-3cm, advanced age, more concomitant diseases and poor liver function, which cannot tolerate surgery. The above treatment methods are only the most important step of liver cancer treatment, but not all; after surgery, other comprehensive treatments should be selectively performed according to patients’ own characteristics and tumor biology to reduce the risk of tumor recurrence. For example, interventional therapy, immunotherapy, biologically targeted therapy, gene therapy, Chinese medicine, etc. In conclusion, as long as any malignant tumor is detected and treated early, it can achieve good results and even radical cure.
