What are the symptoms of thalassemia?

Thalassemia, depending on the severity of the condition, can be divided into three types: mild, severe and intermediate. Mild anemia is asymptomatic in many people and is usually detected when family history is investigated. The intermediate type is where the anemia is moderately mild and moderate, and most patients can survive into adulthood. Then the heavy type usually presents with anemia from the first few days of life, hepatosplenomegaly with progressive worsening, jaundice and dysplasia, with special manifestations such as large head, widened eye spacing, saddle nose, prominent forehead and prominent cheeks. The typical manifestation is a gluteal head and the long bones may be fractured. The skeletal changes are the result of hyperhematopoiesis of the bone marrow, widening of the bone marrow cavity and thinning of the cortex. In a few patients, thoracic masses occur between the ribs and the spine. The above content is for reference only.
