High recurrence rate of junctional mucinous cystadenoma

The rate of recurrence of junctional mucinous cystadenoma is related to the surgical status of the cystadenoma. If the size of the junctional mucinous cystadenoma is small and if the surgery is performed in strict staging with clean removal of the entire uterus, both adnexa, pelvic lymph nodes, appendix, and the greater omentum, leaving no tissue adhesions, the chances of recurrence of the junctional mucinous cystadenoma are very low. If the junctional mucinous cystadenoma is large and is not removed cleanly, or if the female patient has a need for fertility and the contralateral ovary is preserved at the time of surgical resection, the chance of recurrence of the junctional mucinous cystadenoma is high. Therefore, in order to reduce the chance of recurrence of junctional mucinous cystadenoma, patients should follow the doctor’s instructions for treatment after surgery and have regular follow-up examinations.
