Symptoms of Cholesteatoma

Cholesteatoma is most commonly found in the ear canal and intracranial, and patients show different symptoms depending on the type of cholesteatoma. Cholesteatoma of ear canal mainly manifests ear pain, tinnitus and hearing loss, while intracranial cholesteatoma manifests symptoms of increased intracranial pressure and local symptoms. 1. Cholesteatoma of the ear canal: it is divided into cholesteatoma of the external auditory canal and cholesteatoma of the middle ear. Patients with cholesteatoma of the external auditory canal may manifest ear pain, ear stuffiness, and even some of them may have hearing loss. Patients with middle ear cholesteatoma may have tinnitus, ear pain, and even some of them may have ear pus. 2. Intracranial lipoma: if cholesteatoma is located in saddle area, patients may show symptoms of increased intracranial pressure such as headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and optic papillae edema, etc. The local symptoms may be endocrine symptoms, which may show secretion of all kinds of hormones such as growth hormone, which may show gigantism. If the cholesteatoma is located in the posterior cranial fossa, the patient mainly manifests cerebellar ataxia in addition to symptoms of increased intracranial pressure.
