Is a sore knee gout?

Knee soreness is not necessarily gout and needs to be clarified with specific pain characteristics and laboratory tests. In general, if the knee soreness is sudden and accompanied by swelling, further tests such as uric acid, blood sedimentation, and C-reactive protein need to be given. If the knee soreness is caused by gout, there will be elevated blood uric acid and inflammatory markers, while other ancillary tests, including joint ultrasound and dual-energy CT imaging, will see evidence related to urate crystals. It is just important to note that if it is early stage of gout, there may be no change in imaging, which needs to be analyzed specifically in the context of other medical history and clinical features.
