How does acupuncture treat depression?

Since acupuncture is widely used and its efficacy is certain, depression and its associated or secondary physical illnesses can also be treated by acupuncture. However, acupuncture treatment should also be based on the patient’s symptoms combined with tongue and pulse signs, and the treatment can be decided only after identification. In general, TCM believes that depression is closely related to the dysfunction of the heart, liver, spleen and kidney. Therefore, when treating depression, we must first identify the condition of these internal organs of the patient and then further establish a treatment plan. Based on the analysis of the treatment and efficacy of depression, we summarized and analyzed two groups of acupuncture points for depression treatment. The acupoints: the five viscera plus the diaphragm, namely the heart, lung, spleen, liver, kidney and diaphragm. The rationale for applying this group of acupoints is that depression affects the heart, liver, spleen, lung and kidney, and because depression is mostly a stasis of qi and blood due to emotional disorders, which is accompanied by symptoms of stasis. Di Yu is a blood meeting point and has the effect of activating blood circulation and resolving stasis. Therefore, the use of Wu Dou Yu will calm the mind, tonify the kidneys, strengthen the spleen, calm the liver and unblock the qi, so that the qi of the five organs will be harmonized and the function of the organs will gradually become normal. Acupoints: Shenting, Baihui, Annmian, Shenmen, Sanyinjiao. If the patient is emotionally unstable or depressed, add Hegu and Taichong; if the patient feels Qi moving up and down in the abdomen or abdominal distension, add Qihai, Zhonggui, Neiguan and Xuangui to move Qi and broaden the chest to stop distension. In the treatment, these two groups of points can be used alternately, and the patient can get the effect of calming the heart and clearing the brain, calming the mind and fixing the spirit. If the patient also has other symptoms, other corresponding acupuncture points can be added to the treatment. Although antidepressant treatment has good efficacy, there are still varying degrees of side effects, risk of overdose and certain contraindications. Acupuncture treatment has shown unique advantages such as rapid improvement of symptoms and no side effects, and is gradually accepted by patients. The effect of acupuncture treatment alone is similar to that of drug treatment alone, while the effect of using acupuncture with drug treatment is significantly improved.
