Does sunlight plus vitamin D improve asthma symptoms?

According to the official website of the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) on May 20, the latest research from King’s College London shows that sunlight plus vitamin D can significantly improve asthma symptoms. Interleukin-17A may aggravate asthma symptoms when produced in excess in the body, reducing the body’s sensitivity to steroids, a drug commonly used to treat asthma. Researchers studied blood samples from 28 asthma patients (18 who showed steroid resistance and 10 who were effective with steroids) and 10 healthy people. The results found that sunlight plus vitamin D significantly reduced interleukin-17A levels in the asthmatics. This suggests that sun exposure and vitamin D may provide adjunctive treatment for asthma. Study leader Professor Catherine said, “Hopefully, future studies will demonstrate that vitamin D can reduce the amount of steroids used by patients.” However, experts suggest that asthma patients should still follow strict medical advice on medication for now.
