Comprehensive treatment modalities for armpit odor

There are many kinds of treatment methods for axillary odor, from the original axillary odor excision with early pike excision of subcutaneous skin tissue, to CO2 laser cautery treatment, and anhydrous alcohol subcutaneous injection sclerotherapy, to the present treatment with local subcutaneous botulinum toxin injection, liposuction surgery treatment under local swelling anesthesia, and subcutaneous scratching surgery, to the so-called axillary odor radical surgery with ultra-thin flap method. After years of experience in our department, we have basically eliminated the previous treatment methods based on the treatment effect, complication rate and severity, and now we have saved three treatment methods, namely: ① subcutaneous botulinum toxin injection treatment; ② minimally invasive liposuction and scraping surgery; ③ ultra-thin flap method. Each of these three methods has different indications, and there is no absolute good or better. All of them have both advantages and risks or disadvantages. The choice of which one to choose is based on the patient’s actual needs and ability to tolerate the risks and the estimated recovery period after surgery. For Botox injections for armpit odor, the advantages are: no significant recovery period and almost no side effects. There are no problems with wound healing or bleeding from infection, etc. While reducing the smell, underarm sweating is significantly reduced, reducing the embarrassment of wearing short-sleeved light-colored clothing in summer. Disadvantages: The effective time is about half a year. It is possible that the smell will not disappear completely, but only be reduced. If necessary, you will need to repeat the injection treatment after 4-6 months. The cost is around 3000 per time. For the so-called minimally invasive small incision treatment of axillary odor, our department actually combines the surgical advantages of swelling liposuction and shear scratching to increase the eradication rate of the procedure. Advantages: The healing time is shorter than the ultra-thin flap method, and the stitches are removed in one week. The chance of delayed wound healing is very low. The cure rate is over 70%. Disadvantages: there is still a possibility of subcutaneous hematoma, epidermal necrosis (of course lower than that of the ultra-thin flap method), and postoperative recurrence (higher than that of the ultra-thin flap method, about 30%). Early postoperative bipedal upper extremity braking for at least 5 days, requiring rest and being attended to. The cost is around 4000. Axillary odor radical surgery (ultra-thin flap method), also called large incision (about 4cm) by some patients, is probably said for the minimally invasive small incision of about 1cm. Advantages: The treatment with the lowest recurrence rate. It should have less than 10% recurrence rate. Disadvantages: problems in the wound healing process, such as bleeding from the wound, subcutaneous hematoma, hematoma may lead to infection, problems with skin fragment viability leading to epidermal necrosis or skin fragment necrosis, wound dehiscence, etc. In severe cases, long-term dressing changes (1-2 months) or re-surgical suturing or skin grafting to repair the wound are required (of course, the chance of occurrence is low, below 10%). In the early postoperative period, both upper extremities need to be braked, which is more strict than minimally invasive, and the braking time is longer than 7-10 days, requiring rest and care. The cost is around 5000. Overall, you need to choose a treatment that may be more risky if you want to cure completely and prevent recurrence. If you are afraid of the risk of poor healing, you will have to accept the temporary improvement of receiving treatment every year. Or choose a middle-of-the-road minimally invasive treatment. As of right now, there is no perfect treatment, only the right treatment. So, when you come to me and ask, which is the best? Which is the best we choose, you can carefully refer to the above to choose a treatment that you think is right for you.
