How long does it take for the fetal stool to clear?

Usually, fetal stool is eliminated in 2-3 days. Fetal stool is formed in the mother’s body and consists mainly of intestinal secretions, bile and amniotic fluid swallowed by the newborn. The newborn begins to eliminate fetal stool about 10 hours after birth, when it is mainly black-green or dark green, sticky and odorless. It takes about 2-3 days to pass the stool. Because of the different bowel movements of newborns, it may take about 1 week for some newborns to pass fetal stool. If a newborn does not have feces within 24 hours after birth, the newborn needs to be further examined to rule out conditions such as anal atresia or megacolon. The newborn should be started as soon as possible after birth. If the start of breastfeeding is delayed, the amount of milk cannot meet the physiological needs, which may also affect the elimination of stool.
