Which hurts more, stones or childbirth?

The numerical pain scale in medicine classifies pain on a scale of 0-10, with higher levels indicating more painful sensations. Stones mainly include gallstones, kidney stones and ureteral stones, and generally they produce a pain level of 3-4. If a stone is stuck in the ureter it will produce renal colic, which can reach a level of 6-7, and the contraction pain of childbirth can reach a level of 7-8, so generally stone pain is second to childbirth pain. However, as each person’s pain tolerance and severity of illness varies, it will be different and cannot be generalized. It is important to note that not all stones will cause significant pain symptoms. If the stone is in the renal pelvis or in the kidney, or if the stone is relatively small, the pain symptoms will be less severe. In the case of ureteral stones, which tend to cause pain, for example, the pain mainly comes from acute obstruction. The inner wall of the ureter is relatively thin, and after being rubbed, stretched and squeezed by stones plus violent contraction, it will produce very intense pain. At the same time, stones also often induce inflammation in the ureter, stimulating more painful nerves, so it will aggravate the pain, which can be relieved and controlled by antispasmodic and analgesic drug treatment. The pain caused by childbirth comes from the bouts of contractions and dilatation of the cervix and vagina, and the tearing of the perineum. The pain of childbirth lasts for a long time, some pregnant women have pain for a few hours and some have pain that lasts for several days. Considered from this perspective, childbirth may be more painful than stones.
