Can a fractured patella return to normal?

In general, patella fracture can be restored to normal as long as it has received reasonable treatment and rehabilitation exercises. Patients with patella fracture without obvious displacement can be treated conservatively, usually with cast or brace immobilization for 4~6 weeks. Patients with significantly displaced patella fracture need to undergo surgical treatment, which includes tension band fixation, bioabsorbable tension band, patella plate and so on. Rehabilitation exercises need to be gradual. First of all, the lower limb muscle static functional exercise is needed, and moderate knee and ankle flexion and extension exercises are carried out after the muscle strength is strengthened. You can get out of bed with the help of crutches, but at the beginning, you can’t bear weight when you get out of bed. Go to the hospital on time for follow-up, take radiographs, and gradually increase weight bearing and exercise according to the degree of healing of the fracture. If the treatment is not proper or the exercise is not enough in the later stage, it may leave sequelae. Dislocated fracture is not reset, which may cause non-union or malunion of fracture, forming traumatic arthritis and causing pain. Insufficient post-exercise may cause adhesions around the patella, resulting in limited joint mobility. Patients with patella fracture should seek medical treatment in time, actively carry out rehabilitation training, and follow up on time, and generally can return to normal.
