Is it normal to have a toothache after a fresh filling?

Whether it is normal to have toothache just after filling depends on the specific situation and cannot be generalized. If the original cavity is located in the dentin layer, after cutting the dentin, the patient will feel soreness to cold, hot, sour and sweet stimulation, and the pain will disappear after the restorative dentin is formed, which is a normal phenomenon and there is no need to worry excessively. If the pain persists or gets worse gradually, it may be because the tooth decay is more serious, the filling material is close to the nerve or long-term deep caries, the pulp has been infected and chronic inflammation has appeared, it is suggested that the patient should follow up with the stomatology department as soon as possible and further treatment if necessary. If pulp penetration occurs during the repair, the tooth will be in severe pain after filling, in this case, the filling needs to be removed and root canal treatment is completed. In addition, if the filling material is too high, it can cause pain when the patient bites, and the patient needs to go to the dentistry department to grind off the overly high filling material to ensure normal bite. After filling, it is recommended that the patient should not chew too hard or sticky food for 24 hours and wait for the filling material to dry or cure before eating normally.
