What is the cause of bad breath?

Halitosis, called “mouth filth” in Chinese medicine, refers to the breath in the mouth, also known as breath odor, breath filth, breath odor, stink breath. According to the survey, about 1 / 4 of the world’s people suffer from varying degrees of bad breath. Do not underestimate the small problem of bad breath, it will make people (especially young people) afraid to interact with people close, thus creating low self-esteem, affecting the normal interpersonal, emotional communication, it is very annoying. Many patients do not understand why daily brushing, rinsing often, chewing gum still can not cover the problem of bad breath. In fact, many bad breath is only a superficial phenomenon, many are caused by disease. So simply rely on gargling, chewing gum, brushing, can only be “cover up”, treating the symptoms but not the root cause, can not cure bad breath from the root. The cause of bad breath can be oral diseases, such as dental caries, periodontal disease and oral cancer, etc. Diseases of organs near the mouth, such as tonsil stones, sinusitis, nasal polyps, etc., can also lead to bad breath. Many systemic diseases also exhale with some special taste odor, such as the breath of diabetic patients with a fruity taste, the breath of patients with renal failure with a fishy smell, liver cirrhosis patients with sulfur in the mouth, etc. Chinese medicine believes that bad breath is the result of dysfunction of the five viscera and six internal organs, is caused by a variety of factors such as spleen deficiency, stomach heat, food stagnation, qi depression, blood stasis. Such as the Ming Dynasty Li Shizhen “Compendium of Materia Medica, Volume IV on the mouth and tongue” contains: “bad breath is stomach fire, food depression.” Mainly related to the spleen and stomach dysfunction, emotional and mental discomfort, overwork and other factors, especially the spleen and stomach are most closely related. In Chinese medicine, halitosis is divided into damp-heat evidence of the spleen and stomach, damp-heat, incandescent gastric fire, gastrointestinal food accumulation, liver fire offending the stomach, lung heat and other evidence, with the majority of actual evidence, followed by deficiency evidence, and the least mixed evidence of deficiency and reality. The actual evidence is mainly damp-heat, followed by fire and food accumulation, mainly blamed on the spleen and stomach, followed by liver and lung; the deficiency evidence is mainly yin deficiency, mainly blamed on the spleen and stomach, followed by kidney deficiency. It is very effective to treat the evidence separately. However, some bad breath is difficult to cure, and with the growth of time, it will become more and more serious and difficult to cure. Therefore, do not take bad breath seriously and try to treat it early.
