How long an artificial lung lasts is usually related to the degree of recovery of the patient’s own lung function and cannot be generalized. Artificial lung is a kind of artificial gas exchange machine, which temporarily replaces the function of lung for gas exchange to meet the patient’s oxygen demand when the patient has serious lung infection or pulmonary edema that affects gas exchange. In the case of advanced lung cancer patients, there may be the possibility of distant metastasis of cancer cells, even if the use of artificial lungs, their survival period will not be too long, usually about half a year to a year, or even shorter, so, this type of patients are not recommended to use the artificial lungs; in the case of respiratory failure caused by common infections, the artificial lungs are able to help the patients to get through the critical period of the disease, and the survival period is usually not affected. In addition, the clinical use of artificial lungs is mainly to maintain the stability of vital signs, and at the same time need to actively cooperate with the treatment of primary lesions, in order to better extend the survival cycle of patients.
