Misconceptions about teeth

First: I often bleed from brushing my teeth, must I be brushing too hard? Most of the bleeding is caused by inflammation of the gums (periodontitis), but many people mistakenly believe that the bleeding is caused by brushing too hard and damaging the gums. As a result, brushing avoids the gums, resulting in poor brushing, which makes the area around the gums more and more dirty and worsens periodontitis. Second: If the gap between my teeth increases and my teeth are sore after scaling, must my teeth have been damaged during the scaling? Some patients feel that their teeth are sore and soft after scaling, and they feel that they are paying for the pain, and they find that the gap between their teeth has increased, so they think that the scaling must have damaged their teeth and made the gap thinner, and they decide not to scaling again. The real situation is that a large amount of tartar has accumulated near the roots of the teeth, and when the tartar is removed by scaling, the teeth are exposed again, which will make people feel that the gap between the teeth has increased, accompanied by sensitivity, and the sensitivity will be slowly reduced after about three or four days. However, if the tartar is not removed and the gums are continuously stimulated, the roots of the teeth will eventually be exposed and the teeth will become painful or even fall out. Third: I have one big tooth missing, I still have a few teeth and it doesn’t affect my appearance, so I don’t need a veneer? Missing one big tooth will lead to lower chewing efficiency and increase the gap between teeth, which will easily breed bacteria, increase the risk of tooth decay and periodontal disease, and overgrowth of symmetrical teeth, while the adjacent teeth may move or tilt, which will be difficult even if you want to set a tooth in the future. Fourth: Children’s teeth will be replaced later due to tooth decay, so don’t pay attention to it? People generally think that children’s teeth will be replaced, so it does not matter if they have decayed. In fact, children will not complete the whole procedure of tooth replacement until they are 12 to 13 years old, so if they lose their baby teeth too early, it may lead to other tooth malformation. Fifth: Pregnant women have bad teeth because the BB draws away the calcium from the teeth. Many people think that pregnant women are prone to bad teeth and tooth decay during pregnancy because the fetus in the womb draws away the calcium from her teeth. Due to hormonal changes during pregnancy, the gums of pregnant women are prone to redness and bleeding due to the stimulation of toxins secreted by the germinal membranes, and at the same time, the eating habits of pregnant women have changed, and they eat more sweet and sour foods than usual. Therefore, we remind all women to go to the dental hospital for a comprehensive oral examination and oral cleaning care before preparing for pregnancy and raising a baby, so as to provide protection for safely spending the pregnancy period. Sixth: I do not accept X-ray examination because there is no need and there is radiation. X-rays are necessary in the consultation process as they can reveal the extent of tooth decay, the cause of toothache and the adequacy of dental veneers and implants. According to the current recommendation of the International Commission on Radiological Protection, the radiation limit for the public should not exceed 5 mSv (msv) = 5,000 mSv per person per year, according to this calculation, each person can receive 200 intraoral dental x-rays per year, so the dose of dental x-ray examination is very low. Seventh: A filled tooth will not be decayed in the future. Generally, patients have the mentality that a filled tooth is permanent and will not be decayed in the future. But think about it, a healthy and normal tooth can decay, how can a filled tooth not decay again? Tooth decay is generally caused by bad eating habits and oral hygiene, if the situation is not improved, the filled tooth is more likely to decay again, which is also called secondary caries. Therefore, it is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene, and once the filling material falls off, it should be filled in time to avoid the secondary caries. Eighth: I am too old to be orthodontic. Some patients think they are too old to be orthodontic, but this is actually wrong. There is no age limit for correction, of course, the correction time of children is faster, plus the development period, the effect is more half the effort. Adult orthodontic time is relatively long, but does not mean that adults are not suitable; due to work relations, adults do not accept to see people with braces, so not orthodontic. Now there are invisible braces, or lingual braces, can help such patients. Ninth: Doctor, please set my teeth better (full dentures), I want to be able to bite bone, peanuts. Some elderly people have lost all their teeth due to tooth deterioration and require full dentures, but they want to be able to bite hard foods such as bones and peanuts, just like real teeth. In fact, without the support of real teeth, the chewing power of full dentures is greatly reduced, and they are more likely to shift and loosen. Fortunately, dental implants are now available to greatly improve this situation.
