Fetuses with severe small bowel malformations can be treated surgically after birth without inducing labor if there are no malformations in other areas of the body. Severe small bowel malformations can be cured by surgery. If the fetus has severe small bowel malformation, but there is no congenital malformation in other parts of the body, it can be treated without induction of labor. Emergency surgery or elective surgery can be performed after the fetus is born. However, if the fetus has severe small bowel malformation along with congenital anomalies such as severe cerebral bulge, severe open spina bifida, and severe chest and abdominal wall defects, then induction of labor is required. Whether a fetus with severe small bowel malformation needs to be induced or not is a careful choice based on the presence and degree of malformations in other parts of the fetus, as well as the wishes of the family.
