Intellectual disability generally refers to mental retardation, which can be treated through rehabilitation training, medication and surgery.
1. Rehabilitation training: For people with intellectual disabilities, the main focus is on education and rehabilitation training, which can be carried out by school teachers, parents or rehabilitation therapists. For the mildly mentally handicapped, the main focus is on repeated reinforcement of the same content, and training in daily living skills and social adaptability.
For the moderately mentally handicapped, the focus is on rehabilitation and language training. Those with severe intellectual disability need to be trained in coordination and cooperation skills to meet the needs of simple living ability and self-defense ability. For severe mental retardation, education and rehabilitation training are basically impossible.
2. Medication: If the disease is caused by congenital hypothyroidism, it can be treated with levothyroxine sodium as prescribed by the doctor. If the patient is accompanied by psychomotor excitement, aggressive behavior or self-injurious behavior, the patient can be treated with psychotropic drugs such as risperidone and haloperidol as prescribed by the doctor.
3. Surgical treatment: For mental retardation caused by congenital hydrocephalus and neural tube closure insufficiency, corresponding surgical treatment can be considered.
Mental retardation is usually difficult to reverse once it occurs, but it can be treated to improve the quality of life, so patients need to be treated under the guidance of doctors.
