Folic acid for pregnant women can be taken by three year olds, but it is not recommended in the absence of folic acid deficiency. Folic acid is a B vitamin that helps in the neural development of the child. After the baby is born folic acid is mainly consumed in food and folic acid is mainly found in tomatoes as well as in soy products. If the diet is balanced, there is no need for supplementation. However, if the diet is not balanced, the intake of folic acid may be insufficient. Inadequate folic acid intake can lead to symptoms such as fatigue and anemia. Folic acid supplementation is needed at this time to help with nerve development, and can also prevent and treat anemia caused by folic acid deficiency, or vitamin B12 deficiency. Babies should be tested regularly for micronutrients during folic acid supplementation, and once it is found that the child is not deficient in folic acid, there is no need for additional folic acid supplementation.
