How long can you live with advanced ovarian cancer?

Most ovarian malignancies arise from ovarian epithelial cells, with the remainder arising from ovarian germ cells and interstitial cells of the sex cords. Usually, ovarian cancer refers to ovarian epithelial cell carcinoma. As ovarian cancer is mostly diagnosed and treated in advanced stage III-IV patients, after surgery and chemotherapy, although the one-year survival rate can reach 70%-90%, the five-year survival rate is only 20%-40%. In contrast, ovarian germ cell tumors and interstitial tumors of the sex cords can be diagnosed early, while germ cell tumors are sensitive to chemotherapy and radiotherapy, so patients can survive for a long time. For patients with advanced ovarian cancer that cannot be treated, parenteral nutrition and supportive therapy can prolong their lives for several months, but the patients’ quality of life is very low, while causing heavy financial burden and psychological stress to their families. With the development of basic research, the methods of tumor treatment have gradually increased, and certain drugs of targeted therapy and immunotherapy have shown good efficacy and low side effects in some patients, bringing hope to ovarian cancer patients. Currently, palliative care is recognized by doctors and society. Its core concept is to let advanced tumor patients walk with more quality and dignity in the last stage of life and to guarantee the quality of life in the last stage of life.
