In the treatment of urinary tract infections in postmenopausal women, the use of small doses of estrogen (hexestrol 0.125 mg once daily for 10 days, repeated after 3 months of discontinuation) along with antibiotics is significantly more effective, especially in frequent urinary tract infections, and its incidence is significantly lower. Small doses of estrogen have the effect of shifting the vaginal flora from gram-negative bacilli to lactobacilli, thereby reducing the dose of antibiotics used in the treatment of urinary tract infections.
