There are five common treatments: 1. Synovectomy The best time for synovectomy is early in the course of rheumatoid arthritis, when the disease is limited to the synovial membrane and has not yet destroyed other structures of the joint, such as cartilage and meniscus. If regular medical treatment does not work, surgery should be considered to remove the inflamed synovial tissue (cushion tissue) inside the joint, which not only relieves pain, but also delays the progression of the disease and joint destruction and reduces the involvement of other organs throughout the body. The surgery can be performed through an open incision into the joint or using an arthroscope. 2. Osteotomy The joint deformity is corrected by breaking and relocating the bones. With this method, pressure can be redistributed to different parts of the joint and is often used to treat osteoarthritis, especially in patients with combined knee deformities. Some young patients with only unilateral hip problems may also be considered for this method of treatment. 3.Artificial joint replacement When all kinds of treatment methods are ineffective, pain begins to prevent patients from moving normally, joint movement is restricted, and symptoms gradually affect life and work, artificial joint replacement surgery may be required. Artificial joint replacement surgery is a method of replacing a completely deteriorated joint with metal and plastic. This is done by inserting metal and plastic artificial joints in the shape of joints on top of the upper and lower bones. Until today, most people do not know much about artificial joints, thinking that the surgery involves removing the entire joint and putting in a stainless steel joint; in fact, artificial joint replacement is simply removing the worn joint surface and implanting an artificial joint to restore a smooth joint surface. This procedure is considered one of the major breakthroughs in orthopedic surgery in this century. Artificial joint replacement surgery is very safe, takes about an hour and a half to perform, has few surgical side effects, generally requires only two weeks of hospitalization, and joint pain is essentially completely removed after surgery. However, more than 10 years after the surgery, some people’s bones and artificial joints will loosen and need to be replaced again, the proportion of such cases is about 5%. 4. Joint fusion artificially allows the bones at both ends of the joint to grow together, thus eliminating joint pain. This method is mostly used for small joints of the ankle, wrist and fingers. Joint fusion, so that the local limb loss of mobility, but the advantage is to reduce pain, fusion of the joint can also be weight-bearing. 5. Excisionalplasty The worn cartilage and damaged bones at the end of the bones can be partially or completely removed to reduce pain and improve joint function. It is mostly used for the foot, thumb and elbow joints. Again, various surgical methods are suitable for patients in different stages of disease, and artificial joint replacement is the more effective and thorough method.
