Subacute thyroiditis is usually referred to as subacute thyroiditis and can cause fever, pain and discomfort in the thyroid region, and thyroid hormone therapy in cases of hypothyroidism. Subacute thyroiditis is generally thought to be caused by a viral infection. The onset of the disease is usually acute, with fever, accompanied by chills and generalized weakness. The most characteristic manifestation is pain or pressure pain in the thyroid area, which often radiates to the submandibular region, behind the ears or the neck, and the pain is aggravated when swallowing. Treatment is merely symptomatic relief. Non-steroidal drugs such as aspirin are usually sufficient to control symptoms. Glucocorticoids may be considered if symptoms do not improve significantly and are more severe. In a minority of the patient population, the inflammation may be more damaging to the thyroid gland, which can result in the possibility of hypothyroidism, which needs to be treated with levothyroxine sodium tablets. It is recommended that patients with subacute thyroiditis consult an endocrinologist for treatment under medical supervision.
