How long can you live after a double nephrectomy?

After bilateral nephrectomy, if the patient is not treated with hemodialysis and kidney transplantation, his/her survival time will not be more than 72 hours, and the survival time of some patients may be about one week. After bilateral nephrectomy, patients will usually die quickly within 72 hours due to hyperkalemia, high volume load or uremia, etc. Usually, both kidneys will not be removed at the same time. In case of hemorrhagic shock due to bilateral renal fragmentation, or if the patient develops huge tumors in both kidneys and bilateral nephrectomy is necessary, then simultaneous resection will be considered, and continuous hemodialysis or renal transplantation will be carried out in a timely manner for treatment, otherwise the patient will still die quickly. As it is difficult for the patient to survive for more than 72 hours without any treatment such as hemodialysis or kidney transplantation if both kidneys are removed at the same time, the removal of both kidneys at the same time will not be considered unless there are special circumstances. Patients and their family members are advised to discuss the detailed treatment plan with their doctors after knowing the risks of double nephrectomy surgery and the requirements for follow-up treatment.
