Can muscle atrophy kill you?

Whether or not muscle atrophy causes death is related to the cause of muscle atrophy, its location and its severity. Muscle atrophy can be seen in a variety of diseases, mainly including neurogenic damage and muscle-derived damage, and is mainly manifested by thinning and fewer muscle fibers resulting in less muscle volume, and patients are usually accompanied by muscle weakness. When muscle atrophy occurs in the extremities, it does not usually cause death. If the muscle atrophy involves the respiratory muscles, the patient may experience respiratory failure, which can be life-threatening. In addition, some patients may experience life-threatening cardiac damage due to muscle atrophy involving the heart muscle. For neurogenic muscle atrophy, patients need to strengthen the nutritional status and carry out nerve nutrition treatment; if the muscle atrophy is of myogenic origin, it is recommended to strengthen the muscle strength exercise to promote the thickening of muscle fibers to achieve gradual recovery.
