Facial muscle spasm is also known as facial muscle twitching. The typical facial muscle spasm starts from the orbicularis oculi muscle and gradually progresses upward, spreading to the whole face, usually starting after middle age. The cause of this disease is generally believed to be a demyelinating lesion of the pontocerebellar angle facial nerve root compression, caused by a “short circuit” between the nerve fibers, the most common cause of compression is the expansion and extension of the distorted arterial vessels (the posterior inferior cerebellar artery is common), followed by tumors, aneurysms vascular malformations, lifting the above compression, can make the facial muscle twitching stop. In more than 93% of the cases, the facial muscle spasm disappeared after the decompression material was padded into the facial nerve root to make the compressed vessels leave the facial nerve root. The microvascular decompression procedure carried out in our department is an effective method to treat facial muscle spasm.
