Vertebral fractures occur in 1/3 of women over 50 years of age in their lifetime and 1/4 of men over 50 years of age in their lifetime, causing problems such as shortened height, hunchback, and chronic low back pain. 30% of osteoporotic fractures occur a second time within 1 year. 90% of hip fractures are caused by osteoporosis. Up to 20%; of elderly people with hip fractures die from fracture complications within the first year, 40% of hip fracture patients are unable to walk within 1 year, and 15-25%; of survivors are disabled after the fracture and require dedicated care in their lives.
