Can untreated cervicitis become cervical cancer?

Untreated cervicitis generally does not become cervical cancer, and there is no necessary connection between the two. Cervicitis is mostly related to factors such as sexual impurity, cervical damage and decreased immunity. It is caused by the infection of the cervix by pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis or Neisseria gonorrhea, and it will lead to symptoms such as increased vaginal secretions, pain in the lower back and abdomen, and painful sexual intercourse. The emergence of cervical cancer is mainly related to human papillomavirus infection. When women are persistently infected with high-risk HPV viruses, precancerous lesions will be triggered and may develop into cervical cancer. Therefore, cervicitis is an inflammatory reaction and will not become cervical cancer even if left untreated. However, patients with cervicitis should also be actively treated to prevent the condition from worsening.
