May 7, 2013 is the 15th World Asthma Day. According to statistics, there is currently one asthma patient in every 20 people worldwide, and the number in China is 20 million. Adult asthma is a chronic disease that accompanies a lifetime, which determines that patients cannot rely completely on doctors and self-management is especially important. However, in China, only about 5% of asthma patients are actually receiving standardized treatment, and 42% of patients never have lung function monitoring within a year, resulting in progressive disease and poor prognosis. The lack of patient self-management is also an important reason for the lack of access to standardized treatment. Self-management includes allergen protection, rational use of hormones as prescribed by the doctor, and daily monitoring and recording of pulmonary function, which are also often prone to problems. Mold is widespread indoors and outdoors, and is found indoors in unclean refrigerators, food, all wet corners of rooms, wallpaper, and bathrooms. Outdoors, mold is also found growing in turf, grains and flower houses. How to stay away from mold and prevent asthma? Ventilation should be increased indoors, and clothing and quilts should be frequently dried to keep them dry. Remove the dirt formed behind cupboards, tiles, paneling and various fixtures. Furniture should be placed at a certain distance from the exterior walls to allow air circulation. Avoid growing potted plants indoors, as some molds are particularly likely to grow in the soil of pots. In addition, dust mites in indoor homes are allergens that tend to cause asthma. Therefore, do not use duvets, silk quilts and bedding made of animal fur, and regularly iron or sunbathe quilt covers, pillowcases and bedspreads; avoid using sofa covers, upholstered chair covers, curtains, mattresses and carpets made of thick tweed. Children with asthma should not play with stuffed toys, or regularly (e.g. once a week) put such toys in the freezer for 24 hours to freeze the mites, and then rinse them with cold water. What we often call “hairy foods” are not necessarily food allergens for asthma patients, and foods that are not allergic after careful screening of medical history can be consumed without contraindication. Avoid foods to which you are clearly allergic, and do not overly avoid other foods to ensure balanced nutrition. Allergic foods can be removed by deep processing of food to remove, destroy or reduce the content of allergens in food, or by adding certain ingredients to improve the physicochemical properties and material composition of food, so as to achieve the purpose of removing allergens. And allergen screening can be achieved by in vivo experiments for skin prick test and in vitro experiments to determine blood specific IgE.
