Constipation may be related to the nature of the medicine taken or the patient’s own constitution, such as taking too much or too long of warm and hot medicine, or the patient’s own spleen and stomach weakness (spleen and stomach insufficiency), overdose of nourishing, warm and tonic Chinese medicines, can lead to constipation. There are four qi’s in Chinese herbal medicines, which means that the medicines have four different medicinal properties, namely cold, hot, warm and cool. If medicines of warm and hot nature are taken in excess or for too long, it may lead to dryness of the stools and thus constipation may occur. If the patient’s own spleen and stomach are weak, overdosing on nourishing and warming Chinese medicines may easily lead to stagnation of the spleen and stomach and a decrease in the ability to transport and digest, thus resulting in constipation. If constipation occurs after taking traditional Chinese medicine, it is recommended to stop taking the medicine and go to the hospital for formal treatment. It is recommended to follow the doctor’s instructions to use medication, do not self-medication.
