Proper traction for the cervical spine

The correct method of cervical spine traction mainly pays attention to the traction position, traction mode, traction weight, traction angle, traction time and so on.
1. Traction position: the common traction position for cervical spine is supine position and sitting position. In the supine position, the muscles and tissues of the neck are in a relaxed state, and the posture is easier to maintain. Therefore, the supine position is recommended for traction.
2. Traction mode: intermittent and continuous traction. Prolonged continuous traction is not recommended. Intermittent traction can be traction for 30 seconds and relaxation for 10 seconds, which can make the neck muscles rhythmically tense and relax, play the role of massage, neck blood circulation, and improve the symptoms.
3. Traction weight: according to the doctor’s experience, the patient’s tolerance level to choose the weight, generally 2~5kg, lasting 15 minutes to 1 hour can achieve good clinical results.
4. Traction angle: the size of the traction angle is related to the position of traction. For cervical radiculopathy, 15°~25° of forward cervical flexion is often used, while other types of cervical radiculopathy use manual traction test to select the best traction angle.
5. Traction time: generally 15~30min, 1~2 times a day for 2~4 weeks. It can also be extended according to the patient’s condition.
The method of cervical traction is made by the doctor according to the patient’s condition, if you need cervical traction, please go to the regular hospital to follow the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment.
