The disease of the joints is referred to in the Chinese medical text “Jin Kui Yao” and belongs to the category of paralysis. In Western medicine, it is a disease of rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis of the knee. The most striking feature of the disease is that it is affected by the surrounding environment, with significant pain and limited movement in the joints when it is cloudy, raining, or cold. For osteoarthritis, Chinese medicine mainly treats the disease by generating sweat, dispersing wind and cold, and warming the meridians. For pain in the joints, the main formulas chosen are Gui Zhi plus Fen Zi Tang and Ma Huang plus Fen Zi Tang, which are more effective in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis.
