Can infants heal themselves from shock?

Generally, infants who are frightened can heal on their own, but parents should take care to reassure them promptly. If an infant is frightened for a longer period of time and the symptoms do not subside, medical attention is recommended. Because of their underdeveloped nervous system, infants may be frightened by loud sounds or stimuli. If the symptoms are not severe and do not cause crying at night or interfere with eating and sleeping, they can usually heal on their own without treatment. However, if an infant is sensitive and has nighttime awakening, crying and poor feeding after being frightened, and if the symptoms do not subside after repeated reassurance by the parents, he or she should be taken seriously and seen by a pediatrician. For frightened infants, parents should soothe them as soon as possible, through soothing words or music, so that their emotions can be stabilized as soon as possible and they can be removed from the frightening environment.
