Hemoptysis is one of the classic symptoms of bronchiectasis. Bronchiectasis is a permanent pathologic dilatation of the bronchi caused by a variety of factors, which results in recurrent purulent inflammation of the airways. Typical symptoms of bronchiectasis are chronic cough, coughing up of purulent sputum and recurrent hemoptysis. Hemoptysis is present in the majority of patients, but its severity varies according to the progression of the disease. In addition, in a few patients, hemoptysis may be the first or even the only symptom, a condition known as dry bronchiectasis, which occurs mostly in the upper lobe bronchi. When these symptoms occur, it is important to seek medical advice and standardized treatment under the guidance of a doctor to intervene in a timely manner to avoid further progression of the condition.
