Where does the prostate grow?

The prostate is a fibromuscular gland located in the lower part of the true pelvis, behind the inferior border of the pubic symphysis and the pubic arch and in front of the rectum, in the shape of a chestnut. The prostate gland can be divided into 3 parts: the base, the body and the tip. The base of the prostate faces upward and is slightly concave, abutting the base of the bladder and bladder neck. The urethra enters the prostate near its anterior margin and passes between the anterior 1/3 and middle 1/3 of the prostate and exits through the apical part of the prostate. The apical part of the prostate points anteriorly and inferiorly and continues with the membranous urethra and external urethral sphincter. Between the base and the tip of the prostate is the body of the prostate, behind which the ejaculatory duct passes obliquely and opens into the seminal caruncle in the posterior wall of the prostatic urethra. The normal size of the prostate is 3cm x 2.5cm x 2.5cm and weighs about 20g.
