Constipation, which condition should I go to the hospital for?

In the clinic, there are often cases of people who come to the doctor for help because of constipation, but after careful questioning, we find that 80% of them may not really need medication or other help, but the patients themselves are compelled to seek change because they have self-diagnosed themselves as constipated after comparing themselves with the normal people they understand. What is real constipation? When does constipation require medical attention? Here I will give you a summary. What exactly is constipation in the true clinical sense? We call it constipation when there are less than two bowel movements per week, or when there is difficulty in defecating, hard, granular stools, which can be accompanied by headache and discomfort of rising lower abdomen. It should be noted that many people think that having a bowel movement once a day or not having a bowel movement for two days is abnormal, but it is not. Because there are many reasons that can lead to constipation, many times because of the reduction of their own food or exercise, bowel movements will not be so timely, this is a normal phenomenon, we do not need to worry excessively. We will diagnose pathological constipation only in the presence of the following conditions and when the above mentioned symptoms occur First: people with endocrine and metabolic disorders such as thyroid disease and diabetes are prone to induce constipation. Second: People with central nervous system and peripheral nervous system diseases are prone to abnormal intestinal sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, which leads to defective intestinal motility and easily induces constipation. Third: people with intestinal tumors or inflammatory diseases, their intestinal structure may also undergo organic changes, which may also easily induce constipation. Fourth: long-term use of diuretic drugs, antidepressants, anti-Parkinsonian drugs and other groups of people, because the side effects of drugs lead to constipation. Fifth: people who are nervous because of life, work and other problems, due to the distraction of attention, sluggish feeling of defecation, also prone to induce constipation. Only when the five problems mentioned above produce a bowel movement may medication be needed. The doctor will take into account the patient’s specific problem and treat it. If the constipation is caused by medication, it is usually treated with laxatives; if the constipation is caused by an organic influence on the intestinal structure, it will be treated with prokinetic drugs, or anti-inflammatory drugs, and if necessary, surgical intervention. If the constipation is caused by psychological factors, the principle of “psychotherapy first and medication second” will be followed. In addition, constipation can also be caused by human factors such as reduced food intake, poor eating habits, and reduced water intake. For this non-pathological condition, we just need to establish a reasonable diet, eat a high fiber diet and drink more water. Increasing exercise, good bowel habits, etc. are all self-treatments that can be achieved at home. Therefore, we need to have a more scientific understanding of constipation. If constipation occurs under the five conditions mentioned above, we need to pay more attention to it and go to the hospital for diagnosis and treatment in time.
