Can metronidazole tablets treat periodontitis

Metronidazole tablets do not treat periodontitis, and in fact no medication can treat periodontitis. Adjunctive medication can only relieve the acute inflammation of the gums for a moment and reduce the chances of postoperative infection. To truly treat periodontitis, sequential periodontal treatment must be performed. Periodontal scaling and root planing are performed layer by layer through whole-mouth scaling and polishing to thoroughly remove the calculus and plaque adhering to the tooth surface. The only and most effective means of treating periodontitis is to actually remove the cause of the disease. Moreover, metronidazole tablets have high side effects and are prone to teratogenic and carcinogenic effects, and are not recommended for long-term use. If the inflammation of the gums is severe, generally take up not more than a three-day dose. So patients are advised to take effective treatment as early as possible when they have a disease, rather than relying too much on drugs.
