What’s the point of having a biopsy before intervening in liver cancer?

Biopsy before liver cancer intervention has the function of clear diagnosis and pathologic staging. Diagnosis of hepatocellular carcinoma mainly relies on medical history, alpha-fetoprotein test and imaging examination. For those who have difficulty in diagnosis, hepatic arteriography can be done, and TACE (transhepatic arterial cannulation chemoembolization) can be done at the same time to carry out diagnostic treatment if necessary. Liver cancer biopsy is commonly used for ultrasound-guided hepatic puncture and needle aspiration cytology, and it is of definitive diagnostic significance to find the tumor cells. However, liver cancer biopsy may have false-negative results and occasionally cause tumor rupture, bleeding in the puncture needle tract, spreading of cancer cells along the needle tract and other adverse consequences, so whether it should be applied in clinical practice is still controversial. Early stage of liver cancer mainly adopts comprehensive treatment mainly based on surgery, and TACE, i.e. interventional therapy, can be used when patients do not have the condition of resection or adjuvant therapy after liver cancer resection. The above treatments should be carried out under the guidance of specialized doctors.
