What to do when pregnant women have edema in their feet

Pregnant women with foot edema are advised to elevate both lower limbs, which can significantly reduce edema. It is usually due to the enlargement of the uterus compressing the inferior vena cava, resulting in obstruction of venous return and causing edema of both lower extremities or swollen feet, but it should be distinguished from hypertension in pregnancy and venous thrombosis of the lower extremities. Gestational hypertension can usually be diagnosed by first measuring blood pressure, which is greater than 140 mmHg/90 mmHg. Pre-eclampsia is diagnosed if there is a plus sign of urine protein. The cause of edema is because of hypoproteinemia due to loss of urine protein, which causes edema in both lower limbs or generalized edema, and may be accompanied by headache, dizziness, and blurred vision. Lower extremity venous thrombosis is usually edema of unilateral lower extremity or foot, and there is no simultaneous swelling of both lower extremities or both feet.
